  • Does your acrylic material have any masking on it?
Yes. All manufacturers place a protective masking on the material to prevent any damage in transit. Some manufacturers use paper masking (more common) while others use film masking (there are different types of film masking). The masking type for any acrylic option will be listed in its product description.
  • Is your material laser ready?
Yes**! Our goal is to provide the highest quality materials to our designers. **PAPER: For our laser users, paper masking is the most common option. There are two types of paper masking that you will encounter with our materials. Although this masking is placed on the material to protect it during transit, it can also be used in the laser as a paper masking to prevent any scorching/imperfections along the face of the material from the heat of the laser. The paper masking placed on the acrylic by the manufacturers are laser safe, but may contain a wax that can increase the likelihood of flare ups. Some laser users will use the acrylic as is, whereas some laser users will remove it and replace with their preferred masking (if applicable). **FILM: Some of our material comes with a film protective masking. Our refective mirror, transparent pink, transparent purple, transparent teal, and transparent gold acrylic come with a laser safe poly film masking. Some laser users will use the acrylic as is, whereas some laser users will remove it and replace with their preferred masking (if applicable). Some specialty materials (including some pastels, pearl, and glitter) will have a very thin and flimsy plastic protectant on both sides of the acrylic and this is not recommended for laser use. **No matter what type of material or masking you use, be sure it is laser safe! Always test your material and masking on a small scale prior to beginning your project.
  • If I need to mask my material, what product(s) do you recommend?"
When we need to mask material (like the backside of mirror acrylic), we go with 582U medium tack masking paper (Google search for sellers). We purchase the 12" width 100 yard roll. We also recommend a burnishing tool to smooth down the paper masking to the material as best as possible. **Any loose/poorly adhered paper masking is a fire hazard!
  • Why do some of my sheets look different even if they are the same size, color, and thickness?"
(sizing, thickness, and color) SIZING: Material dimensions provided in the product description are approximate and not guaranteed. For example most products are listed as they are cut (-12"x 19.2") but may be closer to ~11.75"x19" after blade loss. COLOR/SHADE: All cast acrylic is likely to have variances in shade (although they are the same color code) as well as thickness due to the casting or extruding process. THICKNESS: The typical thickness tolorance in cast acrylic can be as great as +/-30%, whereas the extruded acrylic options (currently all mirror & transparent pink, purple, mint, and teal) are much more consistant in terms of thickness with only +/-10%.
  • What is the difference between cast acrylic and extruded acrylic?
The two types of acrylic (cast and extruded) are different due to the way they are/need to be manufactured. Cast acrylic is created when liquid ingredients are poured into a glass mold (more homogenous/even mixture resulting in high quality engraves) whereas extruded acrylic is produced by forcing ingredients through a specified shape (less homogenous/not evenly mixed ingredients resulting in a patchy-looking engrave). Cast acrylic: -less odor -cuts and engraves beautifully -larger thickness variance (sheets can vary up to 30% thickness EVEN WITHIN THE SAME CUT PIECE) Extruded acrylic: -stronger odor -cuts beautifully but does not engrave very well -smaller thickness variance (sheets can vary up to 10% thickness)
