Hey everyone! It’s Ciera here, your Maker Queen on the Crafting Scene! I’m excited to share this project with you using scrap materials and a clearance tray. We're turning a simple wooden serving tray into a vibrant, eye-catching centerpiece that will have guests complimenting more than just the food. We'll be using an array of colorful scrap acrylic strips and turning them into this stunning honeycomb pattern. Let's get started!

Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before we dive in, let's ensure we have everything we need:
Any blank serving tray
Spray paint (if needed)
Laser cutting machine Check out our favorites here!
Sandpaper (if needed)
Epoxy resin & proper PPE (if using this product)
Funny story about this wooden tray: just like any crafter, I couldn’t pass up a great deal for a "blank canvas"! This was found in the clearance section at my local Walmart years ago at the beginning of my craft journey. After collecting dust and surviving a cross-state move, it was finally time to do something with it. Especially since I now have a laser cutter, I could try something new and create something truly unique!

Step 2: Prep
I started by sanding the tray until it was smooth and selecting a turquoise color to match our home decor. While the paint dried, I moved on to creating the mosaic. Don’t forget to seal the tray after the paint dries! I used a semi-gloss polyurethane for this step.
Step 3: Making the Mosaic Pieces
This is a fantastic project for scraps. You can mix and match collections—let your creativity run wild! There are several different approaches at this point (YouTube is your friend if you don’t like my version 😉). I really loved the honeycomb pattern, so I used that as a frame and cut out both the frame and smaller inset pieces from a variety of colors in the greens/blues/turquoise family.

I used double-sided adhesive on the material strips, so all I had to do was peel and stick the pieces inside the frame. All-Craft Multi Glue would also work great for this step!
Once all the pieces are placed into the bottom of the tray, you have a couple of options. You can leave it as is, showcasing the texture of all the materials, or you can cover the design with a layer of clear acrylic. In my specific project, I opted for resin because I wanted to personalize the tray with our last name. I poured a thick layer of resin over the acrylic, let it set for 24 hours, and then used my vinyl cutting machine to cut out our name. Finally, I poured one last layer of resin for a smooth, glass-like finish!

This project is such a fun way to upcycle materials and create something truly one-of-a-kind. Whether you’re making it for yourself or as a gift, the combination of colors and textures makes for a stunning result. I hope this inspires you to dive into your own mixed-medium creations. Don’t forget to tag Cerulean Tides on social media so we can see your masterpieces!
